Arbitel 80 is unsafe to use during pregnancy as there is definite evidence of risk to the developing baby. However, the doctor may rarely prescribe it in some life-threatening situations if the benefits are more than the potential risks. Please consult your doctor.
SAFE IF PRESCRIBED
Arbitel 80 is probably safe to use during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests that the drug does not represent any significant risk to the baby.
UNSAFE
Arbitel 80 may decrease alertness, affect your vision or make you feel sleepy and dizzy. Do not drive if these symptoms occur.
CAUTION
Arbitel 80 should be used with caution in patients with severe kidney disease. Dose adjustment of Arbitel 80 may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
However, inform your doctor if you have an underlying kidney disease. Regular monitoring of blood pressure, creatinine, and potassium levels may be advised while you are taking this medicine.
CAUTION
Arbitel 80 should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. Dose adjustment of Arbitel 80 may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
Use of Arbitel 80 is not recommended in patients with severe liver disease.

How to use Arbitel 80
Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Arbitel 80 may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.
How Arbitel 80 works
Arbitel 80 is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB). It relaxes blood vessels by blocking the action of a chemical that usually makes blood vessels tighter. This lowers the blood pressure, allowing the blood to flow more smoothly to different organs and the heart to pump more efficiently.
What if you forget to take Arbitel 80?
If you miss a dose of Arbitel 80, skip it and continue with your normal schedule. Do not double the dose.
Quick Tips
- Take it at the same time every day to help you remember to take it.
- It can make you feel dizzy for the first few days. Rise slowly if you have been sitting or lying down for a long time.
- Your doctor may get regular test done to monitor the level of urea, creatinine, and potassium in your blood.
- Avoid taking anti-inflammatory medicines such as ibuprofen, along with Arbitel 80 without consulting your doctor.
- It may increase the level of potassium in blood. Avoid taking potassium supplements and potassium-rich foods such as bananas, coconut water and broccoli.
Brief Description
Indication
Hypertension in adults, Reduction of cardiovascular morbidity in adults with atherothrombotic cardiovascular disease, (history of coronary heart disease, stroke, or peripheral arterial disease), Type 2 diabetes mellitus, with documented target organ damage.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Adult Dose
Oral Hypertension Adult: Dosage must be individualized. The usual starting dose of Telmisartan tablets is 40 mg once a day. Blood pressure response is dose-related over the range of 20 to 80 mg. Most of the anti hypertensive effect is apparent within 2 weeks and maximal reduction is generally attained after 4 weeks. When additional blood pressure reduction beyond that achieved with 80 mg Telmisartans is required, may switch to combination, a diuretic may be added. Renal Dose
Renal impairment:
No initial dosage adjustment is required for patients with mild to moderate renal impairment. Titrate slowly in patients with severe renal impairment.
Patients on dialysis may develop orthostatic hypotension; their blood pressure should be closely monitored.
Contraindication
Severe hepatic impairment, biliary obstructive disorders. Pregnancy. Lactation.
Mode of Action
Telmisartan blocks the vasoconstrictor and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II by selectively blocking the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor in many tissues, such as vascular smooth muscle and the adrenal gland. Its action is therefore independent of the pathways for angiotensin II synthesis.
Precaution
Avoid fetal or neonatal exposure, Hypotension, Monitor carefully in patients with impaired hepatic or renal function, Avoid concomitant use of an ACE inhibitor and angiotensin receptor blocker.
Hepatic insufficiency, biliary obstruction, renal impairment, renaly artery stenosis. Correct volume depletion before initiating treatment. Monitor serum potassium levels regularly, especially in elderly and renally-impaired patients.

Interaction
May increase plasma levels of digoxin. May increase serum lithium levels and toxicity. May reduce plasma levels of warfarin. Increased risk of hyperkalaemia w/ K-sparing diuretics, K supplements or K-containing salt substitutes. May antagonise hypotensive effect and increase risk of renal impairment w/ NSAIDs.
Potentially Fatal: May increase nephrotoxic, hyperkalaemic and hypotensive effect w/ aliskiren in patients w/ diabetes and renal impairment (GFR <60 mL/min).
