Prophylaxis of vitamin B6 deficiency states
Adult: 2.5-10 mg/d.
Nausea in Pregnancy
75 mg PO qD
Contraindication
Hypersensitivity. Patients receiving levodopa.
Mode of Action
Pyridoxine is a water-soluble vitamin which functions in the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. It is essential in Hb formation and GABA synthesis within the CNS. It also aids in the release of glycogen stored in the liver and muscles.
Precaution
Drug interaction with Levodopa.
Side Effect
Severe peripheral neuropathies (with long-term admin of large doses). Unstable gait, Paresthesias, Decrease sensation, Decreased folic acid
Interaction
Isoniazid, penicillamine and oral contraceptives may result in greater requirement in pyridoxine dose. Reduces the effects of levodopa, phenobarbitone, altretamine and phenytoin.
