Tropicamin 0.5% is probably safe to use during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests that the drug does not represent any significant risk to the baby. To reduce the amount of Tropicamin 0.5% that reaches the breastmilk, place pressure over the corner of the eye for 1 minute or more, then remove the excess solution with an absorbent tissue.

Tropicamin 0.5% may cause side effects which could affect your ability to drive. Some people find the bright light (such as daylight) uncomfortable for a few hours after receiving Tropicamin 0.5% which may affect your ability to drive.

How Tropicamin 0.5% works

Tropicamin 0.5% is used to dilate or enlarge the pupil of the eye so that the doctor can examine the back of the eyeball. It may also be used to reduce pain in certain eye conditions.

What if you forget to take Tropicamin 0.5%?

If you miss a dose of Tropicamin 0.5%, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

Quick Tips

Tropicamin 0.5% enlarges the pupil for eye examination and is commonly used in adults.

It also reduces inflammation (redness and swelling) after cataract surgery.

Apply pressure on the corner of the eye (close to the nose) for about 1 minute, immediately after instilling the drop.

Wait for at least 5-10 minutes before delivering the next medication in the same eye to avoid dilution.

Stinging sensation may occur for 1-2 mins. Notify your doctor if it persists for longer.

Make sure to use within 4 weeks of opening the bottle.
