Carbohydrate nutrient in diabetic patients, Fluid replacement, Caloric feeding
Adult Dose
It should not exceed 0.5-1 g/kg body weight per hour.
The usual recommended flow rate for adult is 30-75 drops per minute infused intravenously.
Contraindication
Contraindicated in certain inborn errors of fructose metabolism, methyl alcohol poisoning, hyperuricemia, liver failure, and lactic acidosis.
Mode of Action
Hyperosmolar carbohydrate solutions have a direct effect on the GI tract wall, resulting in reduced GI smooth muscle contraction.
Precaution

Side Effect
Intravenous administration may cause lactic acidosis and hyperuricemia. The rapid infusion results in facial flushing, abdominal pain and sweating.
