UNSAFE
Histacin may cause excessive drowsiness with alcohol.
SAFE IF PRESCRIBED
Histacin is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown low or no adverse effects to the developing baby; however, there are limited human studies.
SAFE IF PRESCRIBED
Histacin is probably safe to use during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests that the drug does not represent any significant risk to the baby. Larger doses or prolonged use of Histacin may cause sleepiness and other effects in the baby
UNSAFE
Histacin may decrease alertness, affect your vision or make you feel sleepy and dizzy. Do not drive if these symptoms occur.
SAFE IF PRESCRIBED
Histacin is probably safe to use in patients with kidney disease. Limited data available suggests that dose adjustment of Histacin may not be needed in these patients. Please consult your doctor. Use of Histacin may cause excessive sleepiness in patients with end stage kidney disease.

How to use Histacin
Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Histacin may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.
How Histacin works
Histacin is an antiallergic medication. When your body is exposed to an allergen (pollen, animal dander, house dust etc.), it produces a chemical called histamine. This causes watery eyes, runny or blocked nose, sneezing, skin rashes, itching etc. Histacin works by blocking the action of histamine, thereby relieving these symptoms.
What if you forget to take Histacin?
If you miss a dose of Histacin, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

  • Avoid driving or operating dangerous machinery as it may decrease alertness.

Oral Child: 1-2 yr: 1 mg bid, 2-5 yr: 1 mg every 4-6 hr, 6-12 yr: 2 mg every 4-6 hr. Max: 6 mg daily (1-5 yr); 12 mg daily (6-12 yr). Parenteral Adjunct in the emergency treatment of anaphylactic shock Child: 87.5 mcg/kg SC 4 times daily

Contraindication
Hypersensitivity, Neonates.
Mode of Action
Chlorphenamine is an H1-receptor antagonist which competetively blocks H1-receptor sites on tissues.
Precaution
Elderly, pylori duodenal obstruction, angle-closure glaucoma, urinary retention, prostatic hyperplasia, epilepsy, renal and hepatic impairment. May affect performance of skilled tasks. BPH, bladder neck obstruction, hypertension. Pregnancy, lactation.
Side Effect
CNS depression, sedation, drowsiness, lassitude, dizziness. GI upsets, anorexia, or increased appetite, epigastric pain, blurring of vision, dysuria, dryness of mouth, tightness in chest, hypotension, muscular weakness, tinnitus, euphoria, headache, paradoxical CNS stimulation. Potentially Fatal: CV collapse and respiratory failure.

Interaction
Potentiates sedative effect of psychotropic drugs e.g. barbiturates, hypnotics, opioid analgesics, anxiolytics and antipsychotics. Interaction with alcohol could be dangerous (sedation/excitation).
